'Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels and what he tells himself about what he has seen' Pablo Picasso 1881-1973
JACKIE MIDGLEY - Artist statement & gallery
My own paintings reflect my interest in the intangible nature of personal memories, plus their connection to and interaction with the present. Painting is clearly a two-dimensional process, but as a visual discipline it also allows me, as the artist, to portray a three-dimensional quality and spatial depth.
The physicality of various media within my paintings is achieved by incorporating very textural materials- such as tile cement, wax and collage- to create a visual and physical depth within my canvases. I build out certain areas to form an extra dimension to the painting, cutting and scratching into the surface to create textures and layers in contrast to the fluid areas of pure paint on canvas.
Within all of my work I aim to take the viewer on a visual journey through and around the compositional structure via the various elements and areas. The techniques and details I employ are used in an attempt to add a sense of history and integrity to my paintings, a theme that has become very important in everything I produce.
